Good Grief!

For those of you who like non-fiction books, specifically biographies this particular book by Ellen Stimson, Good Grief!: Life in a Tiny Vermont Village was a wonderful, quick read.  It was laugh out loud funny in some parts and a bit sad in others.  I realized halfway through this that she wrote another book first that may have explained their life a little better.  I will have to go back and read Mud Season to get the juicy details.  I love her outlook on life, she doesn't dwell on things...not really.  She is kind of a fly by the seat of your pants, take the hits as they come, deal with life one catastrophe at a time, woman.  What I took out of this book is to laugh harder, love better.  Hopefully you will, too!

A Wedding in Provence

This novel is straight back to romance by Ellen Sussman.  Named  "sizzling escapist reading" by Entertainment Weekly, I knew if was just what I wanted to read.  Hoping for a low-key idyllic wedding, the happy couple realizes it will be anything but...as the guests begin to arrive.  This is a novel of love, trust, family secrets and the enduring power of love.  A quick, powerful read.  Enjoy!

Life Intercepted

I am not sure I would categorize this book as light and fluffy but it is a great, quick read.  If you like football or sports this is the book for you as well stories about loyalty and lost dreams.  I became immersed in the story right away and could not put it down.  I was pretty bummed when it ended for I wanted to know more but that is only because I like neat, tidy endings.  It ended nicely, I just wanted more or really did not want the story to end.  I love how the author described the feelings of football, not just the game but the comraderie between players, friends and coaches in good times and in bad, wins and losses.  There is an amazing lesson in this story, see if you can find it.

Home Front

This week I chose something similar to last weeks choice, sort of.  Home Front by Kristin Hannah is about a woman who is called to war and leaves her husband and two girls behind.  This is a story of a rocky marriage, made even rockier by war, a husband unaccustomed to being a single father and then having to deal with tragedies war left behind.  I think this emulates many families who are entrenched in military life.  War will change them all.  It is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor and hope.

Don't Go

This one will tear at your heart strings.  But it is soooo good.  You just have to find out the ending because things can NOT get any worse, it needs to get better.  It is all about family, love, betrayal, war and everything in between.  It is gripping, thrilling and profoundly emotional.  Lisa Scottoline pens the story of a soldier who finds out what it means to be a man, a father and a hero to those around him.  He learns what he can save, what he can't and finds out what is most important to survive.  Grab some tissues but know that it will all be okay.  (I did tell you all the books I read have happy endings, remember?)

A Tough Nut To Kill

Once in awhile I like to mix in a little mystery.  Have you read local author Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli?  Dead Dancing Women, Dead Floating Lovers, etc?  Fabulous books.  I absolutely love her humor.  She has recently come out with a new series under the pen name Elizabeth Lee.  Just as fun and mysterious as her other books.  I laughed out loud several times.  I am not quite to the end of the story and still have not figured out "Who dunnit."  Usually I get tired of waiting and read the ending first but I am holding back on this one.  I want to see how it plays out.  Immersed in  the story, I feel as if  a prequel may come out.  I think there is quite a back story there that I am not privy to.  Although, it makes me want to read more of the series.  Keep writing Elizabeth!  Murder, family, love, horticulture, farming, it is all there.  Intriguing.

Family Tree

Barbara Delinsky is such an easy read.  Her works have great flow to them.  I know this title is older but it is a wonderful story. A husband adores his wife and can trace his heritage back to the Mayflower, now the couple is expecting a baby.  What could be more wonderful?  They give birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl with unmistakably African-American in appearance.  Questions and accusations arise while the truth comes out.  This is a wonderfully written novel about family, secrets, personal prejudice, privilege and identity.  Through this journey the couple finds out their strengths, commitments and definition of themselves as a couple, family and individuals.
